Colorado Association for Bilingual Education
"Congratulates the Scholarship 2010 Winners"
College StudentChloe Elwood is a graduating senior from
Eagle Valley
High School is our winner
of our $1500 scholarship for a college student pursing bilingual
education.
She plans to attend Willamette University in Salem,
Oregon in the fall and is truly
an exceptional young person. As one of her teachers wrote in a letter
of
recommendation, “In my fourteen years of teaching, I have taught several
exceptional students. Chloe Elwood, however ranks among the most spectacular,
intelligent,
talented, honest, hardworking, dedicated, positive, reliable,
consistent,
polite, creative and empathetic students I have taught.” We found a
gem, and hope she’ll be able to join us in October to receive her award,
if
not in person, then via Skype.
Teacher
Caitlin Mohl is a teacher at McMeen
Elementary in DPS, is the winner of
our $1000 scholarship for a teacher pursuing an advanced degree. As
Caitlin was about to begin college, and her parents were on their way
home, her
father said, “Here’s a feather, now you can soar”. Her father
would be proud as Caitlin’s application clearly soars above the other
strong applications we received. In response to the question about why
she is pursing her degree, she says, “I believe the additive model (of
dual language education) has the most positive academic and social
outcomes for
students because it has the power to transform both individuals and
society.”
Go Caitlin!
Para-professional
Lilliana Torres is our winner of the $1000
for a paraprofessional pursing
a degree; in fact, she is the first in her family to pursue a college
degree.
Lilliana has been taking classes at the Community College of Denver,
and will continue her studies this coming fall. Her vision, persistence
and motivation is fueled by wanting “to prepare bilingual students to be
able
to receive a good education in both languages since being bilingual,
bi-literate
and multicultural will give them opportunities for a great future and
bright
careers.”
