The legal battle for educational equity in Colorado began in Alamosa. In 1913, Miguel Maestas was not allowed to enroll in the school closest to his home on the basis of his race. With the support other parents and members of the community, Francisco Maestas sued the Alamosa School District Superintendent and Board of Education.
