In describing her project, Ms. Goodson states, “A recipe easily lends itself to keeping ancestry alive as it is a written record that can be handed down.  It functions as a bridge to honor the past and the present and give significance to future generations.  Food is a portal to past experiences-it is a way of binding together family and community.  And of course, food appeals to all of our senses providing a perfect opportunity to teach descriptive writing.  Most importantly families will be creating a valuable heirloom.”

Nuestras Recetas de Familia Writing Project

Family, Food, & Fun: A Recipe for Success

That’s what Caitlin Goodson, a Bilingual teacher at Godsman Elementary School in Denver Public Schools, had in mind when she wrote a proposal for a CABE Grant.

After learning about the availability of grants from the Colorado Association for Bilingual Education, Caitlin Goodson decided that she could enhance the learning of her students by promoting biliteracy and recognizing the value that families bring to the education of their children. So she designed a project to bring families and students together to share, both orally and in writing, family recipes, the stories and occasions behind them, and the processes of making the food and she called it, “Nuestras Recetas de Familia Writing Project”. The project produced a printed book of recipes and stories that each of the families kept to preserve and pass down these traditions.

The $1,300 grant was awarded to Ms. Goodson for the project at Godsman Elementary.  Ms. Goodson says that as an educator she knows that students are empowered when their home language and culture are incorporated into their educational curriculum. “When I can connect our classroom work to students’ lives at home, my students are energized and productive,” states Goodson.  She explains further that, “Work is purposeful and engaging when it is relevant to the students’ lives.”
