The fifth annual Concurso de Deletreo Colorado State Spanish Spelling Bee was held on Saturday, April 10, 2021 in a virtual format. The 2020 State event was cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions. The winners of the state competition are eligible to compete in the National Spanish Spelling Bee which will also be held virtually this year. The Colorado competition included Colorado students in grades 3-8 but only contestants in grades 4-8 are eligible to compete in the National Spanish Spelling Bee. All contestants compete against each other for the overall championship. In addition to overall state winners, students compete for grade level championships. The Concurso de Deletreo Colorado State Spanish Spelling Bee is sponsored by the Colorado Association for Bilingual Education.
In a field reduced by the extraordinary events over the past year, Boulder Valley School District students took top honors in all categories for the first time in the competition’s 5-year history. The 2021 Co-Champions are Benjamin Chávez Fuentes, a fifth grader at Alicia Sánchez Elementary School in Lafayette and Vanesa Casasola Méndez, an 8th grader at Angevine Middle School also in Lafayette. Third place went to Luna Chulín, a third grader from Escuela Bilingüe Pioneer. The Co-Champions will be sponsored by the Colorado Association for Bilingual Education to compete in the National Spanish Spelling Bee which will be held virtually on July 8-10, 2021.
The 2021 Grade Level Champions are:
- 3rd Grade State Champion, Luna Chulín, Escuela Bilingüe Pioneer, Lafayette.
- 4th Grade State Co-Champion, Maxuel Moore, Escuela Bilingüe Pioneer, Lafayette.
- 4th Grade State Co-Champion, Isabella Consentino Bersovine, Alicia Sánchez Elementary School, Lafayette.
- 5th Grade State Champion, Benjamin Chávez Fuentes, Alicia Sánchez Elementary School, Lafayette.
- 8th Grade State Champion, Vanessa Casasola Méndez, Angevine Middle School, Lafayette.
