COLORADO ASSOCIATION FOR BILINGUAL EDUCATION

The Colorado Association for Bilingual Education (CO-CABE) has proudly supported Colorado’s emerging bilingual students, their families, communities and educators who serve them for nearly 50 years. Through advocacy for civil rights in education and human rights to language, CO-CABE’s mission is to advocate for and enhance the development of educational policy and programs that will positively affect learners and communities of linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds. CO-CABE provides professional development opportunities for educators at all levels, provides advocacy for emerging bilingual learners, their families and communities and the educators who serve them, provides scholarships for undergraduates and graduates in Colorado to serve emerging bilingual students and families, and provides grants for programs that increase biliteracy and biculturalism for students and parent communities. Since its inception before 1984, CO-CABE has been a small but effective non-profit run by a volunteer board. Until recently, almost all functions have been tasked to board members. Within the past few years, CO-CABE has hired several paid consultants to further our mission. In the interest of furthering our impact, the board is seeking a dynamic executive director to continue maturing the organization. The person hired for this position will be the first full time, paid, Executive Director for CO-CABE which will bring the opportunity for significant impact.  The person selected for this position must be well-versed in both operational aspects (fundraising, technology, marketing, outreach, engagement and execution) as well as strategic and organizational elements (planning, staff and organizational development, and advocacy of the mission and vision).

The Colorado Association for Bilingual Education in Northglenn, Colorado, seeks an innovative, experienced and dynamic individual, with demonstrated leadership success in the nonprofit sector, excellent financial development skills and a commitment to bilingual education to serve as its Executive Director. The Executive Director works closely with the Board of Directors in accomplishing CO-CABE’s mission, providing strategic leadership, strengthening the organization and achieving high levels of performance. The Executive Director’s vision, skills, and enthusiasm will enable CO-CABE to successfully implement its strategic plan and sustainably grow the organization and support for Colorado’s bilingual education educator and emerging bilingual communities. The Executive Director will foster broad inclusiveness and collaborative teamwork. The Executive Director implements programs and policies furthering the mission, vision, and strategic plan of CO-CABE, in collaboration with the Board of Directors and its Executive Committee. The Executive Director has operational authority and responsibility for all CO-CABE operations:
• Financial Management
• Staff Management and Development
• Financial Development and Fundraising
• Outreach and Community Engagement
• Governance
• Advocacy

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Strategic Leadership:

The Executive Director promotes and incorporates strategic thinking to bring the organization’s mission and vision to life in the form of concrete initiatives.

The Executive Director has a firm grasp of local, state, regional and national trends in bilingual and bicultural education.

The Executive Director executes the goals of CO-CABE and implements systems and procedures that capture and track key indicators of performance.

The Executive Director also recommends to the board of directors any changes or enhancements regarding resource allocation, organizational structure and policies.

Organizational Management:

The Executive Director is responsible for day-to-day management of CO-CABE.

The Executive Director responsibilities include:

Contract administration, fund raising, fund management, and fund growth, marketing, program development, program administration, technology maintenance, oversight, and development, and overseeing board of director meetings and board relations. The Executive Director also serves as a professional role model for board members as well as constituents and is committed to their professional development by fostering growth, learning, and experimentation.

Development: Working closely with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director takes an active leadership role in identifying, cultivating and securing major donors; applying for and obtaining significant grants; and cultivating and engaging sponsors for events. Development will constitute a significant portion of the Executive Director’s job responsibilities and encompass duties often associated with a development director since CO-CABE does not currently have a dedicated development director.

Financial Management:

Working closely with the Executive Committee, the Board President, and the Treasurer, the Executive Director establishes and maintains strong accounting and financial management protocols and procedures. The Executive Director will provide the Board with regular financial analysis, cash flow, and profit and loss reports. In consultation with the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee, the Executive Director makes and implements recommendations for improving financial controls and management practices.

Community Engagement:

The Executive Director develops and maintains collaborative relationships and communications with public education, higher education, governmental, civic, business, academic, and cultural leaders and organizations throughout the state of Colorado.   The Executive Director seeks to grow and expand CO-CABE’s role in the community, enhancing support for its programs and funding initiatives, and achievement of near-term and long-term objectives.

Advocacy:

The Executive Director actively advocates for emerging bilingual students, their families and communities, the educators who serve them directly and indirectly, CO-CABE, and also more generally for sustainable CO-CABE funding., Coordinating with appropriate community groups and individuals seeking to further that goal and augmenting their activities through collaborative efforts with funders and community organizations and the business community will also be critical.

Governance:

The Executive Director should have a comprehensive understanding of, and experience with, legal and regulatory issues relevant to nonprofit enterprises. The Executive Director will be responsible for identifying and guarding against risks to CO-CABE, preventing liabilities and assuring compliance with CO-CABE’s bylaws. The Executive Director is responsible for the regular submission of corporate, tax, and other required filings and licenses.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ATTRIBUTES

Master’s Degree in a relevant field, Doctoral Degree preferred

Eight or more years working at nonprofit organizations in marketing, development, HR, finance or related fields.

Two years of direct fundraising/development experience.

Five or more years of nonprofit management experience in an operational environment.

Three to four years leading and scaling organizations and staff with demonstrated success in having developed and operationalized strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth.

Three to four years of organizational management with the ability to coach, manage, and develop high-performance staff or volunteers, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget.

Past success working with a Board of Directors with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships.

Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.

Bilingual and bicultural.

Bilingual in Spanish and English highly preferred.

Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning.

Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people.

Work experience in Colorado public schools as an educator and administrator. Work experience in Colorado public schools as a bilingual educator highly preferred.

SALARY & BENEFITS

Negotiable between $80,000 – $90,000 per year depending on qualifications and experience.

Benefits include a healthcare stipend, CO-CABE contributes to retirement fund, three weeks of paid leave, workers’ compensation insurance, payment of dues for relevant organizations, continuing education, and paid holidays.
