Fifth grade students, including 50% emerging bilinguals, assisted in selecting and purchasing new books for the school library. They first analyzed the school’s collection in their library, noting areas, subjects, themes, genres or authors that were strong, and then those that were lacking, in order to research what was available to fill those needs. In groups, students submitted proposals to the teacher-librarian, as to which books they believed the school should purchase and where they were available. The teacher-librarian selected the best proposals and purchased those books for the Pioneer library (using the funds from this grant). Students from the winning groups also won a free book, bookmark and a pencil from collections of donations.
